On the day, it doesn't feel worth writing down. A few months later, when a relative asks how it's going or a review letter arrives, it's hard to remember any of it.
Liber gives those moments somewhere to go. You keep them one at a time, until you can see what they add up to.
How Liber works
Three things, and the first one takes about a minute.

1 Write it down
A sentence or two about what happened. Add a photo if you have one, and choose which child it's about. If it happened yesterday, change the date.

2 It's kept
Every moment is saved with its date, your words and your photos. Nothing is summarised or rewritten.

3 See it together
Open a child's Record and their moments are there, together, alongside the things you keep writing about. It gets more useful every month.
I take a photo and save it in Liber and then chuck the paperwork. If I had to do this all by hand, I would have every intention, but in reality it would not happen.

Billycart wheel came off again. She sat in the driveway for ages working out why.
Cubby roof kept falling in. Tried tape, then pegs, then string. String held.
Cake sank in the middle. She read about why and made another one with less butter.
Rebuilt the billycart axle herself, then showed her brother how it works.
None of these felt like much at the time. Side by side, the same thing happens four times, in the driveway, on the cubby and in the kitchen: something didn't work, and she went back to it.
That's what a kept record does. You write down what happened. Over time, it shows what kept happening.

As a record grows, Liber is designed to read across your moments and point out things that keep coming back. A child going back to something after it didn't work. Explaining something to someone else. Asking about the same thing again and again.
When it points something out, it shows you the moments it means, in your words, so you can check them against what you saw. If it's right, you can keep it. If it isn't, you say so and it's gone.
Liber doesn't grade, score, assess or diagnose your child, and it won't tell you what your child is like. It points to your moments. You decide what they mean.
We're introducing this gradually and carefully.
By design, nothing is pointed out until it has appeared in at least three of your moments, on at least three different days.
We're checking it by hand before it reaches families, so for now most families won't see it yet.
What is a Learning Record?
A Learning Record is the record of a child's learning over time, built from the moments you kept, in your words.
With Liber Plus, you can prepare a Learning Record from your moments and export it when you want to show someone. It helps whenever someone asks how homeschooling is going: a grandparent, an authorised person at a review, or you, on a day when it doesn't feel like much is happening.

Is it the same as a portfolio?
Close, but not quite. A portfolio is usually a selection: the best pieces, chosen to show someone. A Learning Record is the broader record, kept as learning happens, so nothing needs to be remembered or rebuilt the night before a review.
Many families use their Learning Record as their portfolio, or as the backbone of one, alongside work samples or anything else their state asks for. Requirements differ between states, so check your own.

What is Liber?
A journal for homeschooling parents. You write a line or two about something that happened, add a photo if you like, and Liber keeps it, dated, for each child. Over time those moments build into a record you can look back on. With Liber Plus, you can prepare a Learning Record from it when someone asks to see it.
Who is it for?
Homeschooling families in Australia and New Zealand, especially relaxed, interest-led and unschooling families, and families whose children learn in ways that don't look like school. You don't need to follow any particular approach.
Do I need to follow a curriculum?
No. When you save your first moment, Liber asks whether you'd like to follow your state's learning areas or use your own categories. You can skip it. It only changes how your record is organised. Liber never tracks you against it.
Can I use Liber for unschooling?
Yes. It was built with unschooling and interest-led families in mind. You record what actually happened, not what you planned.

Is a Learning Record the same as a portfolio?

Will it meet my state's registration requirements?
Requirements differ between states, so check your own. Liber gives you dated evidence of learning, kept as it happened. It doesn't write your learning plan for the next period, which some states ask for, and it can't guarantee an outcome.
Does Liber assess my child?
No. Liber doesn't grade, score, rank or diagnose, and it never compares children with each other or with a standard.
What does Liber recognise?
Liber is being designed to point out things that keep appearing in your moments, like a child going back to a problem after it didn't work. Nothing is pointed out until it appears in at least three moments on three different days, it always shows you the moments, and you decide whether it's right. It's included on both plans, and it's being introduced gradually, so most families won't see it yet.
Can I add photos?
Yes, to any moment. A photo is never required.
Can I record more than one child?
Yes. Add as many children as you like and choose who each moment is about. Each child has their own Record.
What if I miss a few days, or a few weeks?
Nothing happens. There are no streaks and nothing counts against you. Add moments from earlier days whenever you remember them.
What happens to my records over time?
They stay, dated and unchanged, for as long as your account is open, on either plan. Your whole journal history is kept with no time limit, and it gets more useful the longer you keep it.
How much does Liber Plus cost?

Can I export my data?
